I was recently asked about what goals I had set myself in the Working Out Loud circles I have been a part of. I have collated them all for the first time in this post.
These are the goals from my 5 normal circles and in the pilot WOL Self-Care circle I was in. I facilitated all of these circles.
I had some success with my goals but none were fully completed!
Circle 1
To create new content (blog/Facebook posts, comments and so on). My main output was this blog post all about me! :)
https://srjf.blogspot.com/2017/03/who-is-simon-why-is-simon-simon.html
Circle 2
To read Jane Bozarth's "Show Your Work" book in 10 weeks, apply it by making notes of the book and adding my perspective and thoughts to those notes and then actually showing my work during the 10 weeks. This will include seeking feedback on that work and looking for co-creation opportunities with a view to actually co-creating products in weeks 7-9.
Circle 3
To fulfil my core desire of being simultaneously a generalist and a specialist, I will focus my learning in 2018 as follows:-
In January to further encourage my voracious appetite for learning, I will read and apply Walter Isaacson's Leonardo da Vinci
in February to address my issue of being easily distracted and to start working and reading more deeply, I will read and apply Cal Newport's "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World"
in March to understand Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and set my 1st set of personal OKRs, I will read and apply Christina R. Wodtke's "Radical Focus: Achieving Your Most Important Goals with Objectives and Key Results" (OKRs)
Circle 4
Read and apply “Reinvention Roadmap: Break the Rules to Get the Job You Want and Career You Deserve” (Liz Ryan)
Circle 5
To co-create a “Leading Virtual Teams” playbook that is immediately usable by the co-creators and anyone else who reads it.
“Co-create”: with others within our circle and others around the world.
“Leading”: the product is aimed at those setting up, leading and running such teams.
“Virtual Teams”: any work in any organisation or involving any freelancer where digital technology is used to get work done including customers and suppliers to the “host” organisation.
“Playbook”: a “document” that outlines best practice in as concise and as entertainingly a manner as possible with zero jargon.
My main input will be the “Mastering Virtual Teams: Strategies, Tools, and Techniques That Succeed” book.
WOL Self-Care circle
There were no personal goals in this circle as there were lots of exercises in the 6 x monthly circle guides.
I took a particular interest in journalling my inner voice/critic.
This is some info from the circle guide for these pilot circles:
"Unlike a WOL Circle, there is no goal or relationship list. The practices are largely focused on yourself. The only goals are to develop greater self-awareness and mindfulness. These are the keys to realizing more of your potential as well as a greater sense of fulfillment and happiness. The reason for the Circle meetings is that the structure, shared accountability, and support can help each person make progress. Also, reflecting on and exchanging experiences each month can advance your learning."
