My Top Ten: Memorable Working Out Loud (WOL) and WOL Circle Moments to the end of February 2018

This is my response in my 3rd WOL circle in Q1 2018 to the “Your Top Ten” exercise in the WOL Circle guide for “Week 9: Explore more original contributions”.

“Memorable” meaning various things including serendipitous, emotionally moving, deepest learning, mindblowing, encouraging and reasons I do WOL and WOL circles.

So many highlights but this is the list that came to mind in one immediate writing session. Sequence is not significant.

  1. First hearing about “Working Out Loud” and “Working Out Loud” Circles from Michelle Ockers (Digital Knowmad, Australia) in May 2016
My WOL relationship with Michelle started when I asked her, a complete stranger then, via a tweet, what her Harvard’s Leaders of Learning assessment was. I spotted her tweet mentioning that MOOC’s hashtag. I had previously done the MOOC and Michelle was doing it then. We then exchanged lots of tweets while Michelle was at the ATD 2016 conference in Denver, Colorado. That included the following tweets.
  2. Recruiting my first WOL circle and 1st jumping on to a Zoom call with 5 complete strangers in January 2017
  3. John (Stepper) (New York, USA) reaching out to me for a 1:1 call in February 2017
It was great to have the opportunity to get to know each other at John’s request. No agenda. Simply sharing with each other what we were currently up to and future plans.

  4. Sonsoles (Alonso) (Barcelona, Spain) reaching out to me to do 2 x 1:1 calls in Q1 2017
We were both in our 1st circle together. We went on to do a Designing Your Life book club together in Q2/3 2017. The first call was Sonsoles running through the Gottman Institute’s Four Horsemen of Communication (Sonsoles had mentioned these in a circle call and I had asked for more info) and the second became a coaching conversation on my WOL circle goal.

  5. Liz (Kentish) (Stamford, UK)’s stone wall blog post
This experience was documented in a curated set of Tweets that I still share now to explain what can happen if you work out loud and make contributions. I love this story! It started via our mutual love of music.

  6. Rita (Zonius) (Melbourne, Australia) visiting me (Bradford, UK) for a few hours while she was in London for a few days in October 2017
I knew Rita from us both participating in #ESNchat on Twitter and then doing a Designing Your Life life design conversation with Rita which then led us to do a WOL circle together and while we were doing that circle Rita was in London on business and speaking at conferences and suggested we meet up. Our meetup documented in this photo album.

  7. Fiona (Michaux) (Brussels, Belgium) inviting me to do One Word 2018 with her in November 2017
We had both tweeted a response to World Values Day earlier in the year but never exchanged tweets with each other but did so when World Values Day tweeted the stats from their campaign and I asked Fiona what her core value was …
  8. The author of a book quoted in Jane Bozarth’s book “Show Your Work” did not know he was in Jane’s book in October 2017
I love it when I get tweets from people who I have referenced by their Twitter handle in a Tweet – yes, it takes time and you may not get that many responses back when so doing but it is so worth it when you do ….
  9. Being given an educational licence to use Workplace by Facebook in November 2017 and then being able to share that platform with others who want to run their WOL circle on there
While thinking about doing a 3rd circle. I had a crazy idea of maybe trying to do it on the Workplace by Facebook platform as a novelty and to keep me fresh while circling as well as using a new platform thereby adding to what I was learning. A few days later in the regular weekly #ESNchat, the theme was “bring your own question” and then this happened in response to a tweet of mine …
  10. The author of a book that I asked and answered questions on in a solo Twitter Chat tweeted at the end of the chat saying how encouraged he was that I had used his book and exhorting me to keep on Working Out Loud! in February 2018
The book was “Consumers”. The author was Harry Dry. I was keen to keep #PKMchat “live” on a week when we were down for a “holiday”. I had heard of the book via Steve Clayton (Chief Storyteller, Microsoft). Saw the book via animated page, was struck by how it talked about content in its widest sense and was so “me”!! Lots of questions came to mind so I dumped them as scheduled tweets into Twetdeck and then proceeded to answer the questions live on Twitter. I got 1 Like and that was it and then got this tweet … (see the full Twitter chat).
