I have responded to someone today asking about what to select as a goal when taking part in a WOL circle. This was my response.
When selecting a goal, the world really is your oyster. You are limited only by your own creativity and imagination. My personal elevator pitch for someone to join a WOL circle is based almost totally on the goal criteria.
My paraphrase of these is to select a goal that:
(1) you are passionate about
(2) you cannot do on your own so you need the help of others
(3) is something development-related (you learn something new)
(4) you can achieve, ideally, in the 12 weeks of the circle, if you were to push yourself.
(2) in my experience is my main personal challenge but the circle guide exercises help me to reach out beyond my own comfort zone to connect with such people.
I would also say that what often helps is to do a goal for something that you have wanted to do for a very long time but have never made time to do anything about.
There is nothing mandated about a goal having to be work-related. It can be a goal in any area of your life.
Best wishes in selecting and achieving an amazing goal and finding a great circle to support you in doing that.
