Introduction
I am currently in Week 6 of my 3rd Working Out Loud circle and are being asked to review our internet presences and change them appropriately in the light of what we are learning from the circle.
In the post below, I sequence my 5 main online presences in the order of their importance to and use by me. Each section includes a snapshot of my profile page for each of these online presences.
What is your usage of this platform?
This is my main platform that I use for all areas of my life.
Critical to me is my connecting with people on this platform. I was already doing this before ever hearing about working out loud. Now, though, I am far more intentional about what I say to connect and how I go about connecting.
Twitter Chats are a core part of my personal development and help me understand what I know, do not know, want to know, should know and give ma food for thought on what I should be looking to do next. I continue to Storify/Wakelet groups of tweets from chats that I am involved in. I need to go back and review these more often but I do often pass people links to them where I specifically remember one that would be valuable to another person.
This is both work and play. I tweet all my music album plays. I often tweet what I am reading, podcasts I am listening to, TV programmes I am watching etc.
What is your overall view of this platform?
An indispensable platform for my personal development and a nice-to-have for my personal journal-type activities.
What is your view of your home page?
I am struck that since I last changed it, this is now primarily work-based in terms of my roles and skills. This misses out a significant part of the other roles and interests that I have in my life as documented in my 50 Facts About Me.
I have never really sorted out my use of the “Pinned Tweet”. May be I should use it for a tweet that has links to core content about me and my current activity (not daily!) but updated for larger changes.
What do you think other people would think about you when they view your home page?
That I am all about serious stuff and that could not be further from the truth!
They might be curious about the main profile pic (my elder daughter took it when I did not know she was, it is me in my favourite part of the world on Achnacloich beach on the Isle of Skye). This is my happy place where I can fully recharge and take stock.
I have never had a photo of me that I have been totally happy with for use across all social media platforms. I suspect I would make more of an effort if I was a freelancer or officially tweeting on behalf of an employer.
In the light of the work you are doing in this WOL circle e.g. your goal and the “50 Facts About Me”, what changes to your profiles should you make and why?
I reviewed the profile words and wider profile elements to better reflect the full scope of who I am. Updated the words per screenshot:
How did you feel when you made the change?
Definitely a better representation of who I am across all roles in my life. Not many characters to play with though!
What else do you need to do with your profile on this platform and in your use of this platform?
If I was ever to use Twitter for directly work-related activity, I would need to understand timing of tweets, content of tweets, usage of media in tweets to encourage responses etc.
I feel proficient in what i need to do for my use of Twitter.
What is your usage of this platform?
My use of Facebook started as exclusively personal with no friends listed who I did not know or where there were other reasons for friending them. This all changed at the start of 2017 when I started joining FB groups for book clubs and the Working Out Loud Facebook group. This was the time when my two worlds collided totally.
I tweet and FB post lots of the same content via Hootsuite to save me time.
Often these groups are not ideal as they are closed and there are lots of examples where I have copied and pasted posts from FB to my blog for wider dissemination.
This is the platform that is probably the main cause of me being out of control with where my content is. I often forget where I have posted some content that is useful again later and some of these can be coimments on posts or main posts in FB.
What is your overall view of this platform?
It is a necessary platform to connect, engage and discuss specific issues etc relating to e.g. Working Out Loud and I value those conversations and the content from which I can learn.
What is your view of your home page?
It is very key factual largely due to the FB fields. There is a bio section that does not look like I have activated it! The picture is an old one of me now but is a fave of me. Don’t ask how old that chunky jersey is!
What do you think other people would think about you when they view your home page?
If it is like me looking at other people’s, you usually need to be friends with the person to see all the info. I would hope that there is nothing there that would put people off. This leads me to the view that it is someone’s content or a wider reason such as membership of a FB group or knowing someone on some other platform that would lead them to find you on FB and that therefore the profile is less important.
Worth noting that this would be a more serious issue for those who are using FB for business pages, groups and so on.
In the light of the work you are doing in this WOL circle e.g. your goal and the “50 Facts About Me”, what changes to your profiles should you make and why?
I need to review the bio to ensure it more closely reflects the spirit of my 50 Facts About Me.
How did you feel when you made the change?
Yet to do.
What else do you need to do with your profile on this platform and in your use of this platform?
If I was to ever run a WOL circle on this platform that is definitely a possibility, I would need to understand more about group pages and group functionality. I could see just one group being a limitation for a fully-functioning WOL circle.
The storage space constraint in Slack may not be an issue on this platform for use by a WOL circle.
I should probably understand more about the use of Docs and other files in Facebook. I have hardly seen anyone else use docs in FB which is a mystery to me. Ideally, FB would be capable of full blog posting functionality including embedding multiple content types.
What is your usage of this platform?
Originally, mainly as a professional platform for my CV and a record of my work career. This has never been for a proactive job search to date.
Increasingly, I am interacting with more people on LinkedIn mainly in the context of helping others recruit for WOL circles and to exchange views with others on WOL.
I am increasingly aware that this might be a better platform for long-form posts than FB groups but there are definitely overlapping populations of users (but not fully) on the two platforms.
Interesting to note that the formatting of LinkedIn articles is similar to FB docs.
What is your overall view of this platform?
It is becoming increasingly important to me as a comms platform with prospective WOL circle members.
I am increasing my article production to extend my reach to a wider audience than the groups on FB.
What is your view of your home page?
This is probably OK as a more professional work-related profile of me. I am conscious though that I would still like people to see the full me and that this should include more content about my online learning which is all outside of my day job activities.
What do you think other people would think about you when they view your home page?
Probably that I am way more serious than the full reality of who I am and how I operate.
In the light of the work you are doing in this WOL circle e.g. your goal and the “50 Facts About Me”, what changes to your profiles should you make and why?
Carefully reflect on what is there now and make small changes to widen out who I am as a person. I definitely need to include lots more info on what I have been doing with Working Out Loud circles and the Workplace by Facebook community that I have built from the ground up
How did you feel when you made the change?
I made minor changes to the top line. Changed “Seek, Sense, Sharer” to “PKM, WOL” All the rest remains valid. See below:
Still want and need to make changes to include the 3 WOL Circles I have facilitated and been a member of, the book clubs I was a part of and/or led in 2017/2018, the Workplace by Facebook community management I have been doing in 2017/2018 and the One Word 2017/2018 work I have done and am doing.
What else do you need to do with your profile on this platform and in your use of this platform?
Understand more about how Linkedin articles, posts and comments work and how best to write content to get wider reach.
What is your usage of this platform?
Unsurprisingly, this is my main platform for visual posts. I tend to share the same posts with similar text on other platforms.
This is mainly play and family type posts but I appreciate seeing WOL-related images of what is happening around the world.
This is mainly an entertainment platform for me as a content consumer.
What is your overall view of this platform?
I do not consider myself an expert on this platform but it is very easy to post to.
If my use of social media was more day-job work-based, I would probably use it more in that area for work images.
What is your view of your home page?
I note that I have not completed the bio bit!
What do you think other people would think about you when they view your home page?
They would have to suss me out from the pictures! That might be no bad thing!
In the light of the work you are doing in this WOL circle e.g. your goal and the “50 Facts About Me”, what changes to your profiles should you make and why?
This would probably be a profile that would emphasise the “play” Simon and not the “work” Simon.
How did you feel when you made the change?
Yet to do.
What else do you need to do with your profile on this platform and in your use of this platform?
I have read virtually nothing about how to best use Instagram. I am increasingly curious how people put so many hashtags into their posts!
Snapchat
What is your usage of this platform?
I joined specifically to view Helen Blunden’s and Michelle Ockers’ working out loud snaps.
I have dabbled with this platform and found it the hardest of all platforms to get started and use.
What is your overall view of this platform?
Not at the top of my list.
Hard to use.
High barriers to entry to understand and use.
What is your view of your home page?
It is about as full as you can make it so not much that can be added more than this or so I understand!
What do you think other people would think about you when they view your home page?
Just what can be derived from my emoji!
In the light of the work you are doing in this WOL circle e.g. your goal and the “50 Facts About Me”, what changes to your profiles should you make and why?
None as far as I am aware.
I may check to find out if I could do anything else.
How did you feel when you made the change?
N/A. Yet!
What else do you need to do with your profile on this platform and in your use of this platform?
I currently have no personal incentive to use this platform to any great extent.
Other platforms that may be worthy of review
YouTube
