This is the eleventh post in a series of posts looking at hygge and working out loud circles using Meik Wiking’s The Hygge Manifesto from his book “The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well” as a framework for discussion.
Hygge happens in your personal place of sanctuary. This is usually in your home but can be anywhere where you feel “at home”. It is where when you close the door all the troubles of the world and your world are shut out.
You quickly discover that everyone in a circle and those in the wider WOL circle community who have been through a circle approach their life and work in similar ways. Given the simplicity of the overall structure of circles as laid down in the circle guides, anyone could start a circle with anyone else, choose a new goal and start a circle adventure with no lead time whatsoever. As we are reminded, we do not need a budget for this. Time is the only resource required. This is not an issue for those of us who are doing circles in our own time but may be an issue for those seeking to do circles in organisations where circles are not (yet) mandated.
You just have to look at the #wol hashtag on Twitter and the various #wol tweets from around the world at any given time to see that there is an active and engaged tribe who want the best for those who are circling and to see the wider movement grow and become more influential. This is not from a power or a numbers point of view but for the impact that this will have on organisations and people’s lives. For me, this is based primarily on the giving mentality of those that are contributing to others. This is amply demonstrated whenever anyone asks a question and then the answers from around the world that follow. I also love the encouragement of the tribe by the tribe when someone says they are starting a circle for the first time and/or for the first time in their organisation.
I am grateful to be a part of this tribe. I am glad that I can contribute to the tribe’s development by being a better service deliverer in all the organisations and communities I operate in, by continuing to work on personal goals in WOL circles, by widening my own network within the wider tribe and by encouraging everyone I meet to start or join a WOL Circle.

Closing Remarks
As I was publicising this series before starting, I was reminded by a fellow #ESNchat-er that there is another word related to hygge and that is arbejdsglæde which means “happiness at work”.

… and after completing all 11 posts in this series, I have now discovered that there is a “Happiness At Work” manifesto for this word too! (web site).

To bring this series to a close, it has been a lot of fun looking at hygge and comparing it with Working Out Loud Circle. In summary, there is a lot of overlap of the underlying philosophies of both ways of doing things.
