Some initial info as you start exploring our workspace.
- The circle starts in the 1st week of January 2018 so I am not expecting anyone to start any circle activity early – unless you really want to – and some people do and are!
- The calls each week will be at the end of the week in question so Week 1 starts on January 1 with us reading and doing the exercises in the week 1 circle guide ready to discuss the content and our exercise responses in the first call on Monday January 8. Specific time TBC.
- The Twitter hashtag for this circle is #wol18q1 (abbreviated version of Working Out Loud 2018 Quarter 1).
- Between now (late November) and then, please feel free to play with the service and get familiar with some of the functionality.
- Something that you could usefully and easily do is post some info about you in your Goal group (see below) in one or more posts to start conversations off before we start the circle for real.
- You could also update your personal profile with 2 photos.
- Another thing you could do is the “50 Facts” exercise from the Week 5 Circle Guide. This is a great way of others getting to know you. See my 50 Facts as an example. I did this a few weeks ago as part of my 2nd circle. Post this in your user profile page.
- I am in the process of configuring the environment so if you have any issues or requests, just post in the relevant group (see below).
- Ideally (!), no one should delete anything except for their own posts/comments.
- A key issue for me is working out how to do the circle calls as video con calls and record them in Workplace. This may limit numbers on the call but I will keep you informed about where I am up to with that. If you can help explain any of this, please tell me.
- For those familiar with the consumer version of Facebook, the UI is very similar.
- A brief summary of the groups that are either standard “out of the box” or bespoke that I have created (see left hand menu when you are in Workplace):-
- Standard:-
- Workplace Tips: Helpful tips directly from the Workplace by Facebook team - Designed to help you get the most out of Workplace. Not to be used for posting, just reading.
- General: Everyone using Workplace at “WOL Circle 2018 Q1” (our Workplace organisation name) starts here. Share ideas for changing the way you work.
There is a pinned post in this group titled “Community Directory” that provides an index to all the groups. I encourage you to make that a shortcut in Workplace as well as bookmarking it in your browser. We are already finding that it is making like so much easier!
- Bespoke:-
- “Circle A” – the one group that we will use for all circle comms e.g. briefing notes from me for each week, posting the call videos and snuthing else specifically relating to our circle. There may be other circles being set up in this Workplace community by me that will run independently of our circle.
- “How To Use” Queries: to raise and answer any "how to use" Workplace by Facebook queries within the circle
- “Goal – Simon” etc: there is a group for each named user for content relating to your goal that you and others can use to help you achieve your goal
- “Resources – Workplace”: a group where you can post useful resources for using Workplace
- “Resources – WOL”: a group where you can post useful resources relating to WOL
- “Resources – Zoom”: a group where you can post useful resources relating to Zoom
- “Resources – General”: a group where you can post any other useful resources
- “Project – One Word 2018 – Fiona/Simon”: A (closed group) workstream involving Simon (in the circle) and Fiona (not in the circle).
- Standard:-
- When a new user is added to this circle, each one will be setup as a member of each of the above groups.
- You may not have this functionality but please do not invite anyone to join this Workplace community from within Workplace. Any requests for additional members should be posted in General and tagged with my name.
- When you first start using Workplace, if there is any other info that you think should be added to these “joining instructions” let me know via posting in General and tagging with my name. Any other questions etc let me know in the same way.
