Building a MOOC: Registering with Teachable #pm101mooc #wol #moocs4all

I previously posted about completing a MOOC about building MOOCs on a budget.

Teachable is my choice of free hosting platform for my MOOC.

This post shows the process I have gone through to register with Teachable, setup my “School” and create the entry for my MOOC (but with zero content so far!).

So I went to the URL @ https://teachable.com/ to get the Teachable home page:

I clicked “Create a Free Course” in the top right to get this page:

I entered my email address and clicked “Get Started” to get this page:

I entered the details requested and clicked “Create my school” to get this page:

(note that I originally input my School Name as “Simon RJ Fogg” but later in the process I changed this to “FoggX” – think EdX and HarvardX … Thios has meant that some screenshots have my “old” School Name).

This page is an info capture screen presumably for Teachable marketing and product development purposes which I happily completed but you can skip this page if you want to. This takes you to this page:

So I now have my own “School” which I can no go on to add courses for. I clicked “Create a course” to get to this page:

Having set up the summary course information, I selected “Setup Your domain name” to get to this page:

As I am not paying for a higher service, I had to keep the default domain and clicked “Confirm Domain” to get to this confirmation page:

I then went back to the main Admin page and selected “Customise look and feel” to get to this page:

I retained these options, clicked “Typography” to get to this page:

… and then selected “Colors” to get to this page:

Going back to the Settings main menu, I selected “General” to get to this page:

and this is the second half of the above page:

I updated the details and pressed “Save”.

So this was all relatively painless. I have now got a Teachable account, set up my School and created the first Course heading and overview.

Now, I have a URL - http://simon-rj-fogg.teachable.com/ that gets me to this page (the road photo is the default from Teachable):

As a logged-in Admin user, I select “Admin” in the top menu and on the next page I select “Courses” to get to this page:

If I then select the photo of the bridge being built it takes me to the Course Details admin page for that course:

Selecting “SEO” takes you to this page where you can customise the course URL and change SEO info:

Selecting “Branding” takes you to this page where you can add course images to the course details page:

The page below is the preview page for the course I am creating (this URL may get you to this page):

.. second part of the same screen …

.. and third part of the same screen … there is even more below including, currently, a default FAQ section.

Now I am in a position to start the bulk of the course build work that will include expanding on the course outline and actually writing/ recording content (including case studies and assessment).

I hope this post has given you some insight into starting to use Teachable as a web platform for hosting courses.

Happy to take any questions on any of this and MOOCs in general.
