Great series ended tonight. And apparently no 2nd series. Great TV.

Isaac’s Tomato Soup
Isaac has recently learned a first recipe at school. He made it for us tonight – delicious!
Bank Holiday Monday
Another warm day.
Went over to Burley-in-Wharfedale to find the WYNCHES camp for Isobel and Hannah’s brownie and rainbow camp later in the week.
Stopped at Booths in Ilkley and picked up a stein glass with a big lager can, 2 x Edelweiss Weissbier, a local IPA, 8 x Jennings Bitter (for £8) and 4 pairs of St Peters bottles.
Ended up at Ilkley park for a picnic including the whole family playing cricket and Isaac and I kicking a ball around.

Seedy Recipes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Loved the sound of these recipes; Poppyseed lemon cake, Fennel meatballs, Sesame dressing.
Sunday Visitors
Had Lynsey and Katie round for lunch while Isaac and I watched the England pre World Cup friendly. Maria came for Katie later and stayed a while. Watched some TV with Lynsey into teatime including Dr Who. Chilled afternoon.
In praise of . . . Wisden
I have never owned one of these but it is a publishing phenomenon.
The pleasure generated by the annual appearance of a new edition is reassuringly undiminished

Gordon Brown: The picture that says it all
The place: Downing Street's 'war room'. The time: 19.17, according to the wall-mounted TV. Three minutes later, Gordon Brown resigns. At least one person is crying in this remarkable photograph, but plenty more have cried at the sight of it. Look at the detail, and you see why

Mark W’s 50th
Great party at the Manse for Mark’s 50th. Loads of people but overspilled into covered driveway. Lots of variety of people too and good to have that mix.

As news editor at the launch of ITN, Arthur Clifford, who has died aged 84, revolutionised the reporting of news on television in postwar Britain. His imprint is still on the style of the news we watch today.

Life Group: Meeting Notes: Go Fish #6
6th in Andy Stanley’s recent series titled “Go Fish” at the Barrows.
Summary of content:
It is easy to become consumed in our Christian world, and forget about those who don't know God. It is our responsibility to go back to those people and share what we've discovered.
Lots of discussion with Lynsey, Maria, Joly, Tracey, Dave and Ben.

In praise of … Sir Humphrey
Sir Humphrey would have relished playing the blue and yellow tribes against one another, to ensure neither could achieve anything not to his liking
(Guardian piece)
Yes, Prime Minister theatre production (Guardian review)
Also reminded me of these BBC video clips from the web site of reviews of the party manifestos in this year’s General Election: Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats.
In praise of … Cincinnatus
Cincinnatus's alter ego has an important lesson for the coalition: do your bit, then quit
(Guardian piece)
Cincinnati was named after this person.

Culture Club: Helvetica (Film)
A documentary made a couple of years ago celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Helvetica font.
Best attended session for a while with Isaac, Mark, Hilary, Tracey, an older new guy from church, Eryl and Billy. Good discussion on a rarely, if ever, discussed subject.
Info on the session here including trailer.
Hot Weather Weekend
Both Saturday and Sunday were the hottest days of the year so far.
Made my Lime Thai Chicken recipe.
Took the kids to East Bierley park and played some cricket. Much too hot to run around.

Football: Inter 2-0 Bayern Munich (Champions League Final)
Watched this with Isaac. Not a scintillating game but a good result.
Mourinho went on in the days after this match to take over at Real Madrid.
Cover to Cover Book Club: “Cold Comfort Farm”
Went to another book cub meeting at Vicars Cafe in Shipley. Good discussion of the book with everybody saying that they had enjoyed it. I thought it was a bit rushed at the end as everybody’s “issues” were resolved. We had a discussion about the coalition government and i read this Guardian piece.
Got on to the subject of not finishing books or walking out of the cinema before a film has finished. Also got on to the subject of the future of the church.
We agreed to read “Cutting For Stone” next.

Christine’s 50th
This was a surprise party for Christine from church at Bowling Hotel. Good mix of people and Christine was suitably shocked!
70s Music Day
Went on a successful hunt for all the 70s tracks from 2 double albums from K-Tel that I have on vinyl – 44 Superstars and 40 Super Greats. Great range of tunes.
Church (Disabled Christian Fellowship) Fun Day
We all went to this fundraiser for DCF with lots of stalls, cakes, drinks, bouncy castle etc. It raised £800 and was well attended by people from the estate.

Life Group: Meeting Notes: Go Fish #5
5th in Andy Stanley’s recent series titled “Go Fish” at the Barrows.
Summary of content:
Becoming a Christian isn't about praying a prayer, attending church, or becoming committed to God. The message of Christ is simple: God loved us enough to give His son, Jesus, to die for us. All He asks of us is that we place our trust in Him, and He will give us eternal life.
Great session with Dave, Joly (who was off work today so was able to be there for the whole session!), Tracey, Jon and I.

Obituary: Wilf Paish: passionate athletics coach who inspired performers of all levels
Guardian obituary
Wilf Paish, who has died aged 77, was an original thinker and passionate athletics coach. In a career that spanned five decades, more than 100 of the athletes who came under his guidance became Olympians; the most famous, Tessa Sanderson, won the javelin title in 1984. But Paish's reputation was not founded solely on the achievements of the elite athletes he worked with, but his capacity to inspire even the most modest of performers.

Film: “The Music Man”
This was the film that Mark played clips from in the Wyke anniversary service. I looked up the film on Wikipedia straight after the service. Interesting to see it was released in 1962, lead actress was the mum from The Partridge Family and the film won an Oscar for Best Musical Score.
A church-ey day
After the morning service at HCC (which Jon led), we went to Sue and Anthony’s for All Age Worship planning – next meeting is on the theme of sensitivity. Good lunch and the Egans and Ben were also there.
In the evening, we all went over to Wyke URC to help them celebrate their 186th anniversary. Service was led by Mark and included the Wyke Male Voice Choir and clips from the film “The Music Man”. Great being reminded of a number of the old hymns.
Fish and chips were picked up on the way home.
Football: Hull 0 - 0 Liverpool (Premier League)
Hull and Liverpool closed out hugely disappointing campaigns with a forgettable draw at the KC Stadium.

Football: Crewe 0 - 1 Bradford (League Two)
Ryan Kendall's second-half strike gave in-form Bradford victory at Crewe.

Men’s Breakfast
These are now going monthly which is great. Isaac didn’t come to this one – birthday party at Ponderosa. Hosted by Gateway, Sammy led and the main part of the discussion was on godly men and men of God.

General Election 2010
So the morning after the election and it turns out that we have the Lib Dem MP that I voted for – David Ward in Bradford East.
Nationally, though, all very unclear but interesting times with a hung parliament and Nick Clegg seeking to do a deal with David Cameron.

Church Elders Meeting
1st meeting I have been able to attend since my working stint in Birmingham. This was one of the church streams of meetings and mainly concentrated on events and planning for them.

Bank Holiday Monday
Rachael and I both did our postal vote for the General and Local Elections.
Went over to Chester with the family and Jean to the Blue Planet Aquarium. Enjoyable morning. Highlight was the big aquarium with sharks that you could see swimming over your head as you walked through a perspex tunnel. Picnic lunch outside beside an otter enclosure.
Aborted attempt to go shopping at Cheshire Oaks – no parking spaces and heaving.
Spent some time at the Bookstore at Oakmere – after a struggle finding it, we had not atlas in the car. Then on to Blakemere Craft Centre where there were a lot of different craft and animal shops. One of the shops - Peepultree - had a great black dinner service which I liked and mentioned and the Rachael/Jean agreed!
Drove home and rounded the day off by breaking the ironing board – a metal rod got bent when I was putting it up.

The first BBQ of the year. Went to Lynsey’s with Ann and Joseph with Dave coming later after work. Very cold but lots of fresh air. Great food again. Love BBQ sauce. More chilling inside the house before leaving early evening.

Maria’s 40th
The family were invited to Maria’s 40th at the Six Acres in Tong. Very chilled party with lots of chatting. Kids playing inside and out. Great food.
Football: Bradford 2 - 0 Northampton (League Two)
A brilliant double by Gareth Evans extended Bradford's unbeaten run to five games and as good as ended 10-man Northampton's play-off hopes.
(BBC report)
Film: Ponyo
We all went to see this film at the Kids Club at Cineworld for £1 each. One for all the family but scary in parts.
