Life Group: Meeting Notes: Go Fish #3

3rd in Andy Stanley’s recent series titled “Go Fish” at the Barrows.

Summary of content:

Sometimes our fears keep us from sharing the message of Christ with those who have never heard. We must remember that God is in control, and we have been invited to participate in what He is up to. If we are to be fishers of men, we must ask God to enable us to have the courage to say something when an opportunity to share His love is given to us.

Great turn out. Played the talk in a number of parts and discussed the content after each part. Good discussion with Ben, Dave, Tracey. Ronnie, Dorothy, Lynsey, Joly and I.

Reading for Life

Saw this ad while watching a film on the recorder from many months ago. A great watch.

Reading for Life

My faith and politics “dream” cabinet

This is a quiz worth taking if you are a person of Christian faith. Some very hard questions. As a U2 fan, it was great to get Bono as the 3rd member of the team! I wonder who else is a candidate?

I took the Political Animal quiz on www.susa.info, and my personalised cabinet of political characters was:

William Wilberforce

You basically accept that Christian political action will be necessary on all fronts if we are going to have a fair and righteous society. The law should reflect both Godly moral foundations and practical concern for the poor. This approach is epitomised by the campaigning parliamentarian William Wilberforce, who led the drive to abolish the slave trade and restore the 'manners' (ie moral foundations) of Britain.

Oliver Cromwell

The most committed political activist needs to recognise that there are limits to what can be achieved by politics alone. Ideals can too easily become idols, and some things will never change without an inward work of salvation in people's lives. Puritan parliamentarian leader Oliver Cromwell used the power of the state and military force to pursue his vision of a fairer and more Godly society, but is often accused of oppression and brutality in the process.

Bono

You believe that Christians should be passionate advocates for social justice using every means at their disposal, including political ones. 'Saint Bono of Dublin' has used his massive public profile as a rock singer to campaign for international humanitarian causes, especially in Africa. His faith in Jesus has led him on a journey that has influenced politicians and presidents around the world.

Ill

2 days off work ill with cough, sore throat, high temperature and aches. On the Benylin and Ibuprofen and lots of sleep.

Snowboarding: Shaun White and the Double Cork

Read this Guardian article last weekend about this amazing move.

Wikipedia entry

Obituary: Peter Fraenkel, civil engineer

Peter Fraenkel, who has died aged 94, was a civil engineer at the heart of a movement of British consulting engineers responsible for infrastructure all over the rapidly developing post-colonial world of the 1970s and 80s. He built up a 160-strong practice that produced innovative, heavy engineering solutions to such problems as how to support the world's then longest cable-stayed bridge in Thailand and how to build the biggest road projects at that time through the challenging topography of Hong Kong.

Elders Meeting

I facilitated the bulk of tonight’s meeting looking at the spiritual state of a number of the church’s ministries.

Started with a clip of Alistair Begg speaking on the role of elders back in 1985.

Played a fave scene from the pilot episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Then went through a number of the ministries asking the following questions:-

  • What is the primary purpose of this ministry (in one sentence)?
  • How would you assess the overall spiritual health of this ministry?
  • What should we stop doing, start doing, do more of In this ministry to improve its spiritual health?

Exhibition: Da Vinci, The Genius

Advertised in an insert in a recent Saturday Guardian.

Inventor, artist, scientist, engineer, sculptor, anatomist, biologist, musician, architect, philosopher ….. Leonardo da Vinci was all of these things!

Leonardo left behind precious little for us to marvel at and what he did leave behind is for the main, only on permanent display in many esteemed museums in different cities around the world; and its not moving anywhere, for anyone! Or like the original Vitruvian Man housed in Venice, his originals are considered too fragile and precious to even be on display.

The challenge was, how does one create an exhibition that showcases his full genius under the one roof, and create it in such a way so it can readily travel around the world and be viewed in all the leading cities for the populace to enjoy.

Grande Exhibitions and The Anthropos Association (creators of Il Genio di Leonardo da Vinci Museo, Rome, Italy) formed a very strong and exclusive partnership to do just this, sharing a combined vision for such a showcase international travelling exhibition: Da Vinci – The Genius.
