Sunday stuff

Weather was terrible all weekend, very depressing.

After the Sunday morning meeting, Isaac, Hannah and I delivered church Christmas cards and events invitation flyers to a number of houses near church.

Then watched the Everton/Liverpool derby match (early afternoon kick-off) at the cricket club. Isaac spent more time with Tom, whose birthday party finished shortly after we arrived. Not a very good match but Liverpool got the 3 points.

Lazy rest of the day.

Strictly Come Dancing: Series 7 Week 11 - Professional Couples' Foxtrot

About time the BBC put the professional dancers’ slots on Youtube. This one includes Katya Virshilas.

Bradford Burn

The whole family went for part of the Bradford Burn at HCC from around 6:30pm. It was our worship group that led the first slot that we stayed for. Ben is starting to get increasingly involved with the Burn ministry after his recent trips to Turkey and Berlin.

This was one of the artworks produced during the 6pm to 1am Burn.

One of the best attended meetings for some time.

Watched Rob Bell’s “Everything is Spiritual” DVD at Jon and Maria’s with Ben, Dave, Ronnie and Dorothy. Needed to concentrate to understand and keep up with all the points. Rob’s trademark communication style.

Football: Debrecen 0 - 1 Liverpool (Champions League)

Watched the game with Isaac at the cricket club. A poor game and Debrecen nearly equalised at the end. Kept Chris K in touch via texts. Now the team need to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League to salvage the season.

Liverpool limped out of the Champions League despite victory over Debrecen as Fiorentina beat Lyon in the other Group E match to seal a place in the last 16.

Culture Club: Vantage Point (Film)

The latest session of the Culture Club looking at the film “Vantage Point”. Details of the session here.

Great discussion on a range of subjects including assumptions, taking different perspectives, believing what you see and read, editing of news items and so on. Much laughter throughout even though important subjects. With Hilary, Tracey, Dave, Sue, Anthony, John and Mark. Again the film was well-received and we ended with a chat about things to do next year.

Saturday at home

A grumpy day weather-wise – grey, overcast, misty, rainy etc.

Forgot all about the Men’s Prayer breakfast (again) even though Isaac and I love going and I even spoke about it to someone at work yesterday – must have needed the rest.

Hannah went to Eureka with Rainbows.

Isaac and I went for the paper and then Tesco for me to pick up the party trousers.

Home for lunch (Rachael took Isobel to a new Mumtaz takeaway shop).

Isaac went to the football with Will.#

I finished the All Age Worship slides for tomorrow including stumbling over Secret Affair’s Time for Action which was a great tune (from 1979) for the theme of being practical.

Lazy evening with SCD and X Factor (Joe was the best by a mile).

Family Sunday

Usual morning at church, left straight after the meeting to get lunch at the cricket club but they only serve from 1pm and as the kids were in a rush to help at a Brownies/Rainbows bag pack at Morrisons Mayo Avenue they and Rachael had lunch there.

Isaac and I had lunch at home and watched Vantage Point on DVD which is the next Culture Club subject for next Sunday evening.

We all watched X Factor – Jamie Afro went out.

Family Saturday

Rachael did her annual Christmas shopping trip to York with work colleagues from many years ago so it was just me and the kids during the day.

Isobel had ballet and we went for a quick food shop on the way home.

Isaac went with Will to the Bradford City match.

Lazy rest of day in the house.

C. K. Prahalad remains the world's most influential management thinker

Times article, from which this introduction:
Bookshop shelves groan under the weight of management coaching tomes of all styles and sizes. From Peter Drucker’s 600-page classic MBA text Management to a new paperback Are you a Badger or a Doormat? by Rosie Miller, an executive coach, there is no shortage of volunteers ready to teach managers how to lead people, market brands or draw up bottom line-boosting strategies.

But which, if any, of these authors and strategies makes a difference in the real world of business? To answer this question, The Times works with Des Dearlove and Stuart Crainer, visiting professors at IE Business School in Madrid and associates at London Business School’s Management Innovation Lab, to compile The Thinkers 50, a biennial list of the most influential living management thinkers.

Life Group: Meeting Notes: Work 6

This was the 6th and final session in the series on the subject of being a Christian at work using a study guide - Psalms: Work Songs. Meeting at the Garsides.

Good discussion with Jon, Maria, Dave and Ben. Maria led.

Main theme was about when do we have fantastic days at work and how we deal with not so fantastic days using Psalm 65 as the framework for our thinking.

We started the meeting with Ben sharing about The Burn in Berlin and his current thinking of what God is saying to him. Just before the prayer time, I played a trailer for the forthcoming Steve Chalke “Apprentice Tour”.

Busy Sunday

Philippa brought Isobel back from her weekend in York before we went to church.

After church, we went to Sue and Anthony’s for lunch with Ann and Joseph to plan the next All Age Worship: the theme is “Practical” as the next mark of a disciple. We will be using 2 clips from Chicken Run.

Back home for a short while and then out for the Men’s Curry Night with church people and other friends. Isaac and I went to Desi Spice in Birkenshaw. Around 20 of us went. Service was very slow but a good time to chat and the food was very good. I had 2 meat samosas, chicken balti with 2 chapatis and 2 mango lassis.

Bonfire Night at Ann and Dave’s

With Isobel still at my sister’s the rest of us went to Ann and Dave’s for the annual Bonfire Night party. No one else was there so it was very relaxed and Dave doing his usual storming job as firework MC including a glorious Catherine Wheel! Great food as always from Ann and a great Leffe brune.

Food Shopping

A rare treat (?) as we all went to Tesco’s food shopping after a very late start (lie-in till 10:30). I usually do not go as I tend to put too much stuff in the trolley that we do not really need. This was also the trip where we got a free £18 worth of Baileys Coffee because the half price reduction if you spent more than £30 did not come off the bill and Tesco have a double the refund if overcharged policy. Also picked up a new shirt with waistcoat for the work Christmas party.

Football: Lyon 1 - 1 Liverpool (Champions League)

Heartbreaking result after Babel’s scorching opening goal had given us hope but then Lyon scored the equaliser very close to the final whistle. Better performance than the match against Fulham despite having a large number of usual first team players injured including Gerrard. Torres played again but is clearly well below 100% fit and is only playing in the hope that he can score via flashes of inspiration. Not looking good for progression through to the 2nd stage.

Families sleepover at church

A number of families including the Foggs have gone away together at October half term for a number of years but this year for a variety of reasons (including lack of money!) we didn’t go away. So this year we opted for a mini-break by doing a sleepover at church on a Saturday night from 5pm to the start of the Sunday service.

A number of families joined us including Jon and Maria with their 2, Ann and David with Joseph, Sam with Tegan, Lauren and Adam, and Colette with her two, John A, and Sue and Anthony came for the Saturday bit without sleeping over. Lots of fun, games, food, DVD watching on the big screen (Kung Fu Panda) and amazingly quite a lot of sleep with everyone in the Cafe and Daylight Centre on gym mats, airbeds and Rachael claimed the pull out bed from the big Cafe sofa for her and me.

Quite a bit of noise from the very heavy rain all night and into Sunday morning and it was quite light in the building from all the street lights.

A great time.
