Isaac and I watched this at East Bierley Cricket Club. Liverpool were 2-0 down at half time and although they improved significantly in the second half it was still a poor performance.

This unforgettable show places beautiful masterpieces by Canaletto, Rubens, Rembrandt and Titian next to some of JMW Turner's most dramatic paintings. It shines light on a lesser-known side of the British Romantic painter: his obsession to prove he was just as good, if not better, than the old masters who he so admired.
From a Guardian review
There are many Turners and many ways to think about him – Turner and light, Turner and Romanticism, Turner and the Industrial Revolution. Turner and the Masters is a tough, brilliant exhibition, and grounds Turner in his time, with all the anxieties and problems being a British painter in the early 19th century entailed. Turner was as worldly as he was sublime. His contemporaries – like Constable – knew that you had to watch out for him, and the dirty tricks he'd play at the Royal Academy on Varnishing Days, when artists could touch up their works in the light of what hung beside them. Some of the confrontations between painters and paintings here have not been made since Turner's own time, and some only previously happened in his imagination. This is Turner demystified, and without the mist.

Much praise for the newcomer, Katie Jarvis (Times article).

Thinking about Twiggy’s age reminded me of Anne Nightingale and what she was up to these days. Still DJ-ing! Used to listen to her every Sunday afternoon in the early 80s.

Only recently a Twiggy fan as a result of her Marks and Spencer ads. This Guardian profile as she turns 60 was a good read.

Good to see the questioned becoming the questioners in this Saturday Guardian series over the weekend.
A rare treat as the whole family went to Lister Park, Rachael usually irons when we go but on this occasion the kids really insisted that she come which she duly did. We did change the routine so we did not do the full walk round the park and we had our usual ice lollies at the end despite encouragement not to do so as we had some at home!
Stumbled over this ad which uses Ceremony by New Order as its soundtrack.
As a result of trying to find a YouTube version of the above, found this other Absolut ad (In An Absolut World, Currency will be replaced with acts of kindness)
She has transformed from a near-silent political wife to arguably the most admired and powerful woman in Britain – and a truly modern public figure. How did she do it? And can her extraordinary reinvention help save the Labour party?
Over the past year, as her husband and his government have struggled painfully and sunk in popularity, Sarah Brown has followed a startlingly different trajectory. From being an awkward, near-silent, old-fashioned political consort, she has metamorphosed into a truly modern public figure: talkative, empathetic, informal but infinitely connected, ubiquitous as any celebrity, an avid exploiter of new digital media, an expert assembler of charitable and political coalitions, and an expert blurrer of the lines between them. She has become arguably the most admired and powerful woman in Britain. She might even be the last hope for Labour.

Loved this older tune the first time I heard it and saw the vid on MTV Dance last week. Very chilled.

Silver King from the Ossett Brewery was the guest beer at the cricket club this weekend. Pale and very tasty.

We had Sunday lunch at East Bierley Cricket Club, great food, great value followed by watching Man U beat Man City 4-3. Lunch with Ann, Sue and Anthony. Followed by a quick trip to the park around the corner.

Isaac wants to watch the whole of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. We started with the first one! And stopped at the end of the Council of Elrond scene. We have never watched the three full extended editions.
Isaac and I went to the first Men’s Prayer Breakfast since early on this year. Hosted at our church, Mark and Sheila served us breakfast.
Main discussion was around what we should be doing as a group of men from the various churches around Holmewood and Bierley.
Main focus of prayer was Warren as he starts as pastor at Bierley Bethel and his leadership team that have just been appointed and the wider church as they make the transition with Warren.
Enjoyable night at Mamma Mia’s to say thanks to all the staff and volunteers at the Care Centre part of Holme Christian Community over the past year – I got an invite as one of the trustees/directors. About 60 of us were there and the volunteers were given certificates of thanks.
Sat with Davids W and E, Sam, Rebecca, Ann and Nathan.
Great food and Mamma Mia’s is highly recommended.
2nd in a series on the subject of being a Christian at work using a study guide - Psalms: Work Songs. Meeting at the Garsides as Tracey is getting near to birth date!
Good discussion with Jon, Maria and Dave. Good to meet at theirs so they can be in the group together.
Main theme was lying and integrity at work using Psalm 5.
This was one of social action stream of meetings. Topics of conversation including relationships in the Care Centre and the recruitment interviews for the new Edge worker.
Loved this pic from the Guardian’s Eyewitness series.

A copy of this mag was published with the Guardian yesterday. Reminiscing about the 70s. The back page had that great band, Slade in a colour poster. Their Sladest album was the first vinyl album I owned.

Chris at work mentioned that she had seen this programme last week. Only managed to watch it on iPlayer tonight before it expired. Great memories of the TV series from a year ago and interesting to see how the winners got on opening their own restaurant with Raymond Blanc. Watched the first half with Isaac.
The work laptop started playing up this afternoon. Hate it when the computers go on the blink. Luckily it was last backed up less than a week ago. Will probably need flattening and starting again . . .
One of the casualties was the powerpoint for tomorrow’s All Age event which I had to recreate from scratch . . . .
We were proud of Isaac for volunteering to be a school ambassador at the open day today so early on in his time at that school. Looking particularly smart after his hair cut earlier on in the day.
The question on this morning’s Five Live Breakfast programme was “who sang the original version of “Tainted Love””? I didn’t know the song was not originally a Soft Cell tune.
Anyway, the answer was Gloria Jones.
And the Soft Cell cover:
And a more recent cover by Richard Grey.
Meeting at the Manse to address office locations and who works where as per our requirement.
A great match to watch which I did with Isaac at home. A minor blot on the copybook with the late goal from Croatia. Could we really win the World Cup?
Bizarre what things spark me off. Heard a mobile ring tone last week at work that reminded me of the Casey Jones TV series which I remembered from when I was very young . . .

It was Chris’ last church meeting before he, Lucy and Jessica head off for Cambridge to train for the ministry.
Went for a drink at East Bierley Cricket Club with Sam K, Chris, Ben and Dave by way of seeing Chris off.
Watched this film on DVD tonight. Really enjoyable film with a great cast. Very much my sort of film.
See this earlier post for film details.
Enjoyed this drama series that has just finished its 2nd series – never saw the 1st series.
The first session of the new “term” looking at the film “Black Gold”. Details of the session here.
We watched the film in one of the training rooms on a smartboard with a sound system thanks to Andrew who opened up and set up for us.
Great discussion on a range of subjects surrounding coffee, trade, justice, poverty etc with Sam C, Margaret, Gareth, Billy, Eryl, Hilary, Tracey, Dave and Mark.
Isobel and Hannah went to the Bradford launch of this centenary year at Bradford Grammar School and had a great afternoon.
An OK match but some worrying holes in defence. Watched this with Isaac at home.
I listen to a lot of music and podcasts on the laptop at home and work. I had been using the buds that came with the iPod that I have had for some years. Finally, bought a new pair of headphones, this time the in-ear variety. Wow, how good are these . . .
